Egleston Square is laid out.
March 24, 1866
West Roxbury Selectmen vote to create the square at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Washington Street (then the Norfolk and Bristol Turnpike). Local historian Richard Heath suggests it may have subsequently been named for Cpl. William Egleston, a member of the Massachusetts Fifth (Colored) Regiment, who was killed in the Civil War. The square becomes a crossroads when Columbus Avenue is extended to Seaver Street in 1895.
